150 | Evelyn and Her Dad Discuss the World Sin Eater and Returning Karma

Chapter 1: Evelyn and Her Dad Discuss the Concept of the World Sin Eater

As Evelyn and her dad discuss the concept of the World Sin Eater, she contemplates the heavy silence in the kitchen. The house is too quiet.

Evelyn sits at the kitchen table with one knee pulled up to her chest. Her math book lies open in front of her, full of problems she doesn’t solve. Outside, late‑afternoon light bleeds orange across the backyard fence. Her phone buzzes nonstop with notifications, but she doesn’t look at the screen. She stares at the steam rising from her mug of tea instead.

Behind her, the faucet runs. Her dad rinses dishes at the sink, humming off‑key.

The silence presses on her until she can’t stand it.

“Dad… what’s a sin eater?” she asks.

His humming stops. Water keeps running over his hands for a beat while he thinks. Then he shuts off the tap, dries his fingers on a dish towel, and leans back against the counter to face her.

“In the past,” he says, “people believed in something called a sin eater. When someone dies, they place a piece of ‘sin‑absorbing’ bread on the dead person’s chest overnight. They think the bread will soak up all the person’s sins. In the morning, a special sin eater gets paid a lot of money to eat that bread—so they take on all the dead person’s sins.”

Evelyn frowns. In her mind, a dim room forms: a still body, a candle guttering low, and a single piece of bread rising and falling with a chest that doesn’t breathe.

“So… when they eat it, the sins just… move into them?” she asks.

He nods. “Exactly. The sins get transferred, not purified. The villagers believe the sin eater carries the burden instead, freeing the dead person’s soul to go have a nice, clean afterlife.”

The thought settles on her like a weight. Lately, she thinks too much about death—about people who mess up and never fix it. About what happens after.

“If their make‑believing is strong enough,” Evelyn says slowly, “does it actually work?”

Her dad’s eyes soften. “No one can interview the dead,” he says. “So no one knows if it works. It’s easier to assume the living are doing the right thing than to question the whole system.”

Evelyn stirs her tea, metal spoon clinking against ceramic. Easy for them, she thinks. Just believe hard enough and call it good.

“Blind belief is not very scientific,” she mutters. “Or trustworthy.”

A corner of his mouth lifts. “Fair point. A big test of the whole setup happens when the village’s sin eater dies. Then another sin eater steps in and takes on the load of all the previous sin eaters’ sins.”

Evelyn wrinkles her nose. “That sounds like a Ponzi scheme,” she says. “All the sins of the entire village keep getting… I don’t know, uploaded to the next sin eater, if someone keeps rolling over the same debt forever. What happens when people can’t afford to pay anyone to take that many sins?”

Her dad sighs. “Poor families sometimes give the sin‑absorbing bread to a hungry beggar,” he says quietly. “He eats it, not knowing what it is, and—according to the belief—he takes on all the sins of the deceased.”

A chill crawls down Evelyn’s spine. She imagines an old man in rags, grateful for a free meal, unaware that the village has decided to dump its curse on him.

“So if I’m ever at a house where someone just died,” she says, “I should seriously avoid the bread.” She lets out a short, humorless laugh. “Who even believes something like that?”

Her dad shrugs. “Back then, it was the common belief. No one dares question it. Everyone is scared of what happens if they do.”

Evelyn’s gaze flicks to her phone. Her social feeds are full of people piling on strangers for saying one wrong thing. She isn’t sure the world has changed that much.

“As crazy as it sounds,” her dad goes on, “something like this still exists now.”

Evelyn looks up fast. “Now?”

He nods. “Every month, people go confess their sins to a modern sin‑eater representative. The representative ‘takes away’ their sins and passes them on to a sort of World Sin Eater. Someone decides it’s more convenient to have one sin eater for the entire planet. People drop in once a month. They don’t even have to pay.”

Evelyn arches a brow. “Only one? What happens when he dies? Who takes his load then?”

“The ‘expert designers’ of this system”—he makes air quotes—“anticipate that question. Their World Sin Eater already dies once and then, supposedly, never dies again. He can keep eating all the new sins forever. The representative gathers each person’s sins and passes them to the global Sin Eater, who carries them in a sack over his back—like Santa Claus.”

Evelyn imagines an endless bulging sack of ugly light—dark red, sickly green—strapped to a lone figure’s shoulders. It pulses like a second heartbeat, full of other people’s regrets.

“He must have a huge sin sack,” she says. “Bigger than Santa’s toy sack.”

Her dad nods. “The designers turn the World Sin Eater into an all‑powerful, immortal god.”

Evelyn leans back, trying to decide whether she feels relieved or creeped out.

“Sweet,” she says slowly. “So someone else takes away my sins, and I don’t even have to die first. That’s… actually convenient. Tell me more. Do I have to give him a piece of bread each month or something?”

Her dad shakes his head. “No. The representatives give you a tiny piece of bread, sometimes called a host. It’s a small, round, dry flatbread. They say this tiny piece of bread is a tiny piece of the World Sin Eater himself. The bread acts like a scout. It hunts for your sins and absorbs them. Your sins dissolve out of you and transfer into the Master Sin Eater’s sack. He volunteers to bear the sins of the world.”

Evelyn’s skin prickles. She pictures swallowing that white disk and feeling invisible threads unwind from inside her, tugging at memories, at choices she never fixed.

“Awesome,” she says, but her voice wobbles. “So my sins are wiped, and I get a clean record. That’s… too easy. What’s supposed to stop me from sinning again and again and again?”

Her dad pulls out the chair across from her and sits down. He folds his hands, watching her.

“Each sin record,” he says, “holds your misused energy. You only have so much energy to experiment with. Every sin locks up a part of your mystic light. That energy gets contaminated and imprisoned in the global Sin Eater’s sack.”

Evelyn imagines a glowing field around her body—bright in some places, eaten away in others. Bits of that light tear off like sparks drifting into the dark, sucked into the heavy sack she can’t see.

“Humans are unknowingly programmed from childhood to sin and keep sinning,” her dad continues. “People go to confession every month, walk away with a ‘clean slate’—but they have less and less energy left to play with. The misused energy is taken away and locked up until it’s re‑purified. Energy used for virtuous actions gets multiplied and cycled back to you, ready to be used again.”

Evelyn chews her bottom lip.

“So,” she says, “the more locked‑up, stained energy I have, the less energy I’ve got left for good things? For… anything?” Her eyes drift to her overflowing backpack in the corner, and suddenly she sees it as a metaphor. “Like when I stuff my closet with trash I’m too lazy to deal with. Eventually, it’s so full I can’t use it anymore.”

Her dad smirks. “Now I’m afraid to look in your closet.”

Evelyn laughs, but the sound has a nervous edge. “Fair. But hey, what if you’re my sin eater and move all my trash into your giant closet once a month? I’d love to start every month with an empty closet.”

“The problem,” he says, “is that all your clothes are mixed in with the trash. Everything good—your favorite clothes, things you still want—is tangled up with the junk. If I clean it out, I’d have to take everything. I’m not buying you a full new wardrobe every month.”

He meets her eyes, serious now. “Eventually, you’d come ask for the trash back so you can sort out the good stuff. Your locked‑up sins hold good parts of your soul trapped inside them. When your sins go away, a piece of your soul gets imprisoned too—until you make up for what you’ve done.”

Evelyn’s throat tightens.

“I don’t like the idea of my soul being torn apart,” she says quietly.

Chapter 2: Evelyn and Her Dad Explore Cosmic Law and Misused Energy

As Evelyn and her dad explore cosmic law and misused energy, the atmosphere in the kitchen shifts with the weather. By the time more questions form on her tongue, rain drums against the kitchen window, soft and steady. The world outside turns into streaks of gray and green. Water slides down the glass in twisting patterns—like currents of energy.

Her dad wraps his hands around a fresh mug of tea.

“Without a real understanding of cosmic law,” he says, “people don’t realize when they’re misusing their energy. They lie to save their reputations. They steal when they think they can get away with it, then complain it’s unfair when others do the same. Drugs, alcohol, gambling, ‘anything goes’ sex—rich industries package them as freedom. Immorality gets rebranded as a basic right of self‑expression, no matter how much harm it does.”

Evelyn thinks of kids she knows who joke about getting blackout drunk, who brag about pills like they’re collector cards. One part of her wants to belong in those circles. Another part feels like she’s watching people slowly unplug their own souls.

“Perversions get relabeled as ‘just a lifestyle,’” her dad continues. “Now there’s this new sport—people target others with labels like ‘not woke,’ ‘conservative,’ or ‘racist.’ They hunt them online, judge them without context, and try to wreck their lives.”

Evelyn flinches. She’s seen what one viral post does to a person. “Call‑out culture” sounds cleaner than “sport,” but she knows exactly what he means.

“I always think I’m doing the right thing,” she says defensively. “Unless I know I’m doing the wrong thing. So if I don’t know it’s a sin, how is it a sin? It doesn’t feel fair. To me, an action isn’t a sin if I don’t know it is one. That should automatically protect me from misusing my energy, right? If I don’t know I’m doing wrong?”

Her dad shakes his head. “Not true,” he says. “Indulging in horror and violence misuses your energy even if you call it ‘just for fun.’ Binge‑watching violent content, cheering for cruelty, supporting or promoting anything that misuses energy—those choices still lock up part of your light. Even doing nothing can trap you. People who lazily ignore crime, harm, and overindulgence in vices… they’re accountable for that slothful attitude. Their strength and power drain away. Their weakness grows.”

Evelyn looks down at her hands. She remembers all the times she scrolls past another climate disaster, another hate crime, another story of someone being crushed by a system—and tells herself it’s too big, too complicated. What difference would her tiny energy make?

She lets out a brittle laugh. “That’s why strong make‑believing is so perfect,” she says, leaning into sarcasm. “I can do whatever I want as long as I convince myself it isn’t wrong. Drugs and alcohol are basically magic—people forget all the old‑fashioned, restrictive morals. Instant free pass. They get to go crazy and then not even remember what they did. How can you hold anyone accountable for something they don’t remember?”

Her dad looks at her steadily. “Ask a drunk driver in the hospital,” he says. “Ask a homeless person living with the fallout. Ask criminals in jail. A strong make-believe doesn’t create a new Truth.”

The words land heavily. Evelyn imagines energy again—light shooting out of choices like sparks. Some fly off bright and gold, circling back to the person, feeding them. Others slide like black tar into that unseen sack.

She swallows. “I… didn’t think that far ahead.”

“Free choice has to work both ways,” her dad says softly. “You’re rewarded for good choices. You suffer for the harmful ones.”

Evelyn’s thoughts spin. So much in her life feels out of her control—grades, friendships, the climate, politics. The idea that an invisible cosmic system is also tracking her private choices makes her feel both angry and exposed.

She lifts her gaze, eyes sharper now. “Oh, wait,” she says slowly. “Now I get it. This is where the World Sin Eater comes in, right? I can give him my badly used, sinful energy. What does he do with it?”

“Two things,” her dad answers. “He can carry it around until you want it back, or he can clean off the sinful part and keep all that purified energy for himself.”

“That is not fair,” Evelyn bursts out. “He can’t just keep my energy. I want to experiment with it again. I see kids who use a lot of drugs and alcohol. Their aura feels… dull. Their life energy fades. Their eyes lose their sparkle. Sometimes it looks like there’s nobody home in their bodies.” Her voice drops. “I don’t want to fade away. So… how do I get my sinful energy back?”

Her dad lets the question hang in the air for a second, then says flatly, “It’s too late. You can’t.”

Evelyn’s heart lurches. “What?”

He cracks a grin. “Just kidding.”

Relief floods her body so fast it makes her dizzy. It feels like wind rushing through her chest.

“The World Sin Eater,” her dad says more gently, “waits for you to ask for your energy back. But you need to be ready to suffer the consequences it carries. That painful part is the purification. It helps a lot if you’ve already stopped misusing your energy. Learning which thoughts, feelings, and actions drain you is essential. People who use drugs and alcohol, for example, have to choose a new version of their lifestyle.”

Evelyn winces. “So it’s not just ‘sorry’ and done,” she says. “Can’t the World Sin Eater purify it all before he gives it back? Like if I dump everything from my trash closet into the hallway, and you go through it, pull out the good stuff, and hang it all back in my closet for me?”

“I could,” he says slowly, “but then you’d never learn to do it yourself. If you want your clothes back, you have to sort them and hang them. Same with energy. Long term, it’s much easier if you stop wasting so much. You first need to know—and care about—the lawful consequences for every action instead of pretending there aren’t any. It’s easier not to get drunk than to rebuild a broken body and pay for a wrecked car. It’s far more efficient to act virtuously from the start than to crawl through the fallout of harmful behavior.”

Evelyn tilts her chair back on two legs, then lets it drop with a soft thud.

“You make it sound so simple,” she says. “You tell me to ‘be good,’ and life magically works out. I’m somehow supposed to understand and obey all these restrictive cosmic laws and then live happily ever after.” She folds her arms, bitterness creeping into her voice. “You have an advantage—you’re an adult. Life is so ‘simple and easy’ for you. You don’t have all the mess teens deal with.”

Her dad studies her face. “Interesting point of view,” he says. “I don’t want to trade places with you—high school drama is not my idea of fun—but I don’t think teenhood is harder than adulthood. You’ve got classes and relationships to navigate. But your food, clothes, housing, allowance—that’s handled. You’ve got more free time than adults who work, manage a family, maintain a home, and still go through ‘life school.’”

Evelyn stares at the table, stung. Adults always act like they’re the only ones drowning.

She doesn’t answer. But inside her, questions start pacing like restless animals in a cage.

Chapter 3: Evelyn Writes a Story About the Savior Returning Karma to Believers

Evelyn writes a story about the Savior returning karma to believers as she processes the evening's conversation. That night, Evelyn lies awake in the dark. Her headphones hang around her neck, forgotten. The faint glow of her laptop paints shifting shadows across the ceiling. The rain has stopped, but the air feels charged, like the world is holding its breath.

She opens a blank document. Her fingers hover above the keys. Instead of writing homework, she starts leaking a story onto the page.

In her mind, the World Sin Eater stands on the edge of a jagged cliff, a massive patchwork sack strapped to his back. Threads of dim, multicolored energy leak from the seams and coil around his shoulders like slow smoke.

He speaks to the empty air as if an invisible crowd fills the valley below.

“Since I volunteer to take on the sins of the world,” he says, his voice echoing, “people lose control of their bodies’ desires. They misuse more and more of their limited energy.”

Evelyn sees it now—tiny streaks of light leaving people’s chests, eyes, and hands. Some shine bright gold and spiral upward. Other streams twist into gray ribbons and shoot across the sky, slamming into the Sin Eater’s sack like thrown stones.

“For two thousand years,” the World Sin Eater says, “I bear these sins and carry this energy while I wait for people to reclaim it. I expect they will want it back. But they grow weaker—more addicted to free handouts.”

He shifts his shoulders and shakes the sack. The sound is like chains rattling underwater.

“My experiment works,” he says. “But not the way they think. I’m ready to play a different role now. My contract is only for two thousand years. Hello! Is there anyone willing to take my place? Can anybody hear me?”

The wind roars back at him. No one steps forward. No one wants the job.

“I’ll admit,” he says after a long pause, “this sin sack is heavy. Very few people ask for their sins back. Very few want to redeem the lost fragments of their souls.”

The sack pulses. Evelyn imagines tiny pieces of people—their memories, talents, courage—throbbing inside, packed tight together.

“You’d have a lot of good relationships doing this job,” the Sin Eater calls out. “Plenty of friends who expect you to carry their heavy karmic sins for them. People love you for making their lives easier. There must be someone.”

Silence answers him. The cliff edge stretches empty.

Another figure appears at the top of the cliff—taller, brighter. Light flickers around him like a calm, steady flame.

The Savior of the world speaks, his voice cutting through the wind.

“I hereby give notice,” he says. “Everyone needs to prepare. Your sins are coming back to you.”

The invisible crowd stirs. Murmurs ripple like dark waves.

“No one wants my job,” the Savior continues. “Honestly, I don’t blame them.” He reaches back and taps the enormous sack. “This bag holds bits and pieces of your soul—split off every time you misuse your energy. Your name and return address are stamped on every fragment. When I put this sack down and open it, these soul‑slivers will start working their way home. They are full of your traumas, your make‑believe lies, your addictions.”

The air vibrates with fear.

A group pushes to the front of the unseen crowd—Believers. Their faces blur in Evelyn’s imagination: people of every age, class, and country. Some look like her classmates. Some look like exhausted adults scrolling on their phones.

“No, no!” the Believers cry. “You can’t do that. We believe in you. We have a good relationship with you. You must keep carrying our sins. We are weak and worthless. We can’t handle what we’ve done. Save us from our sinful nature.”

The Savior studies them. He sees deeper than their faces—into their fractured energy fields, their cracked auras, the hollow places where wholeness could live.

“I look out,” he says, “and I see a crowd of fractured souls—miserable, convinced they’re good for nothing. You are correct… and you will stay that way until you reclaim and heal your traumas, attachments and addictions. All your ‘forgiven’ energy is coming back to you, along with the hatred, violence, and corruption it carries. You must grow up and clean your own mess.”

Part 2: The Believers Demand the Savior Continue to Carry Their Sins

The Believers demand the Savior continue to carry their sins as the conflict intensifies in Evelyn's story. The Believers stomp their feet and shake their heads.

“That’s not right!” they protest. “We want to stay like children and do whatever we want. We don’t want to become like you. Have mercy! We want to keep borrowing energy and never repay it. We want endless free stuff with no accountability. We need a magic Savior to clean our house every month and do all our dirty laundry.”

The Savior breathes in deeply. When he speaks, his patience has steel running through it.

“My real work,” he says, “is to act as your guiding conscience, not a jailer for your karmic sins. I am your teacher, your protector, your source of divine inspiration. I will no longer take away the sins of the world. All your misused energy returns to you so you can rebalance it—by sacrificing selfish human desires, obeying cosmic law, and serving selflessly for the good of all life. Your future karmic sins will not be instantly erased. They will boomerang back, letting you feel the pain and suffering you cause. You must redeem your misused energy by recharging it with virtuous purity.”

The Believers look at each other in horror.

“Don’t betray our friendship,” they plead. “We want instant tickets to Heaven. We believe you’ll give us priority passes because we like you and say nice things about you. We sing songs to you. We honor and praise you. We can never be like you—you’re unique and special. We’re all failed experiments.”

Evelyn pauses at the keyboard, her heart thudding. She recognizes this voice inside herself—the part that wants someone else to fix everything.

She keeps typing.

Chapter 4: The Savior Confronts the Rebels and Instructs the Followers About Soul School

The Savior confronts the rebels and instructs the followers about soul school as the factions firmly divide on the cliff edge. From the swirling crowd, another group steps away. Their faces are sharper, their eyes harder. They cross their arms and lift their chins—the Rebels.

The Savior’s gaze moves to them.

“Your friendship with me,” he says, “is not an instant ticket to Heaven. Shame on you for thinking I’d let only my favorites in. Eternal happiness must be earned. Your soul has to learn how to direct virtuous, holy spirit energy wisely, using your spiritual gifts and abilities. Your soul must strive to become a divine being filled with mystic light.”

The Rebels scoff.

“We had a deal,” they argue. “You’re changing the agreement. All we had to do was believe you’d take away our sins. No one ever said anything about you giving them back.”

“So you expect your best friend,” the Savior replies, “to keep picking up your trash and hauling it around forever?”

“We believe you like doing it,” the Rebels shoot back. “We expect you to recycle it and profit from it. Someone lied to us. We were never told we had to recycle our own karmic trash.”

Sorrow tightens the Savior’s expression.

“Lies only work when people are foolish enough to believe them,” he says. “Who would be foolish enough to expect all mistakes to fix themselves? You chose someone else’s deception as your Truth. The Tempters convinced you that you can chase selfish desires and have your best friend pay the price.”

“We don’t trust you anymore,” the Rebels snap. “We’ll find another Sin Eater to take away our sins. We’ll go to fake schools with false teachers who don’t demand holy spirit energy or divine law. Ser Pent will show us how to do whatever we want and make others pay the price.”

Evelyn sees them in her mind, walking off into neon‑lit cities, drawn toward influencers and idols who promise freedom with zero consequences.

The Savior reaches out one last time.

“I beg you,” he says, “wake up from your dark delusions. You look like half‑eaten zombies. The missing parts of your soul are in this bag, waiting to make you whole. Sacrifice your wrongful desires. Surrender to divine guidance. Serve selflessly. Open your mind and heart to feel the pain you cause when you use chaos.”

The Rebels laugh.

“We’ll use negative feelings—hatred, anger, revenge—to power chaos,” they say. “We’ll use that to crush our weaknesses. We prefer our make‑believe fantasies. They stop us from seeing what we really are. We reject you as our teacher and guide.”

“So be it,” the Savior answers. “You were offered help. You refused it. Your returning, untransmuted karma will fill you with more hatred, violence, and rebellion—because you reject purification. Your rotting souls will be dissolved by the chaos you choose.”

The Rebels sneer.

“We reject you as our Savior,” they declare. “We believe our fantasy preferences will save us. We choose endless free stuff—paid for by others. We reject your restrictive virtues and choose our own. We cling to our habits and addictions because they let us indulge our dark desires. We refuse to walk a path of virtues. We will not sacrifice our desires. We chose Sir Pent as our teacher. He will help us satisfy our non‑virtuous cravings.”

The Savior’s voice drops to a whisper.

“Fools who make‑believe without ever searching for real Truth,” he says, “will still face the consequences.”

The Rebels vanish into the shadows.

A last group remains—the Followers. They tremble, but they don’t run.

“We’re upset that you won’t take away our sins anymore,” the Followers admit, “but we accept your help. We’re not happy we don’t get instant passes to paradise… but we still want to be your friends. Show us what we have to do to deserve a heavenly afterlife. Where do we start?”

The Savior’s shoulders relax slightly.

“You must connect with your higher guiding conscience,” he tells them. “Enroll in soul school instead of fake school or karmic hard‑knock school. Study your lessons. Pass your daily tests. The karmic sins of real soul students will be metered out piece by piece—as tests and initiations to help your soul evolve.”

The Followers roll their eyes, almost like teenagers.

“That sounds like a lot of work,” they grumble. “There has to be an easier way. We’re used to make‑believing. Can’t we … believe we’ve already passed the tests? Maybe you could take them for us. Or better—you could write all the answers in one book in microscopic print.”

Evelyn smiles faintly at the screen. She hears their sarcasm almost as clearly as if they’re in her room.

The Savior shakes his head. “Let your intuition and discernment get the answers from your conscience,” he says.

“How can we do that,” the Followers protest, “when our lives are packed with stress, nonstop entertainment, and human desires? That quiet inner voice is hard to hear amid all the noise. You could text or email. Or build a master spiritual website so we don’t have to deal with our conscience. Call it ‘Afterlife Options’ and spell out exactly what to do to get the afterlife we want.”

“Books, social media, and search engines will never replace your guiding conscience,” the Savior replies. “Why would anyone reject a free, professional soul trainer? Humans spend fortunes on schools, advisors, and trainers for their temporary brains and bodies. Soul education and training are even more important. A wise soul searches for the best spiritual trainers in the cosmos—starting with its own guiding conscience.”

The Followers glance around, confused.

“We were taught,” they say, “that our soul is made in the Creator’s image and doesn’t need training. We’re here on Earth to resist corrupted desires and addictions. That’s it. We can’t remake our bodies to be like the Creator’s. Later on, in the afterlife, our Creator will fix everything—resurrect and perfect us.”

“Who would be foolish enough to believe such lies?” the Savior asks. “Your soul is created with potential, not perfection. That potential has to be realized by becoming the essence of your divine consciousness. Earth is a school for soul training, not a playground. Lazy Believers want sins taken away, a free pass to Heaven, and someone else to make them perfect overnight. You expect others to do everything for you. But you yourself must go through the education and training needed to deserve a heavenly afterlife.”

The Followers shift on their feet.

“We want to be filled with Holy Spirit energy instead of dark chaos,” they say. “We were told that if we just believe hard enough, we’ll be instantly and permanently filled with Holy Spirit light.”

“Who would be foolish enough to believe such lies?” the Savior repeats. “First, you want someone to pass your tests. Now you want them to instantly erase your self‑created darkness and permanently fill you with divine light. That’s like being totally incompetent at your job and still expecting a paycheck.”

He gestures toward the unseen cities.

“You want free cosmic light to waste on your desires. That’s like homeless addicts believing they deserve free food, healthcare, and money to buy more drugs. Where is your common sense? Why do you believe such nonsense?”

The Followers hesitate.

“We were threatened with eternal torture,” they confess, “if we don’t believe whatever we’re told.”

“That still makes no sense to me,” the Savior says. “I’d want nothing to do with people who threaten me if I don’t accept their lies.”

They fall quiet, then murmur, “Right now, about half the planet believes in paradise passes, clean‑slate forgiveness, no soul training, and instant Holy Spirit fulfillment. We’ve relied on you as Ticketmaster, scapegoat, test‑taker, and banker. How do we start doing all this for ourselves now?”

The Savior steps closer. His light washes over them.

“I am willing,” he says, “to act as an intercessor to help purge your souls of your shadow‑dwellers. Over many lifetimes, you create a dark‑side self. It stores your make‑believe fantasies, traumas, harmful patterns, and negative thoughts and emotions. I can help you cast out that night side in a joint effort, making room for Holy Spirit energy. Your shadow side is what blocks more pure mystic energy from reaching you.”

The Followers brighten with greedy hope.

“Oh, thank you for taking on the job of casting out our dark squatters,” they say. “Let us know when you’ve done it. We’ll be thrilled to have all our addictions, vices, and bad habits removed. There are so many new distractions we want to try. How often can we call you to clean out our shadow dwellers? Bad habits form fast. How about once a month—for a tune‑up and exorcism? You’re our best friend. Think of it as practice to keep your miracle skills sharp.”

The Savior actually laughs, but it sounds tired.

“Now you want free healthcare,” he says. “I’m not your monthly exorcist‑on‑demand or traveling personal therapist.”

The Followers are already imagining mansions and comfort.

“We want to thank you in advance,” they say, “for giving us a mansion and letting us live happily ever after. We’re glad we won’t have to work in the afterlife since we worked so hard on Earth. You are man’s best friend.”

The Savior’s light flares, then flickers, like a candle in a storm.

“I want no more of your company,” he says at last. “I return all your sins to you. You want someone else to pay your debts, give you housing, basic cosmic income, and free healthcare. You refuse soul school and heavenly work. A heavenly world filled with citizens like you would turn into hell very quickly.”

He lets go of the sack.

In Evelyn’s imagination, the bag splits open. Threads of dark and bright energy whip out like storm snakes, each streak racing to find the soul it belongs to.

Her fingers were still on the keys. The scene freezes on the screen.

Chapter 5: Evelyn Decides to Reclaim Her Energy and Stop Relying on the World Sin Eater

Evelyn decides to reclaim her energy and stop relying on the World Sin Eater as she reviews the document in front of her. Evelyn stares at the last line she types. Her chest feels tight, as if something inside is pushing to expand.

She snaps the laptop shut. The room drops into darkness, lit only by the faint orange glow of the streetlight outside her window.

She lies back and watches the blurred patterns of light on the ceiling. Her day replays in her mind like a highlight reel: snapping at a friend over text, laughing at a cruel meme, ignoring a kid getting hassled in the hallway. Tiny choices. Tiny leaks.

She imagines her own energy. Some of it feels bright and warm—when she comforts a classmate, when she stands up for someone online, when she quietly recycles instead of tossing everything in the trash. But other parts… those look like sticky gray threads, lifting out of her, drifting toward some enormous sack she can’t see.

What if this isn’t just a story? She wonders. What if it’s a map? A warning?

The thought doesn’t feel preachy. It just sits there, solid and true.

She thinks about identity the way everyone at school does—who she is in class, online, at home. Which version is real? The girl who says she cares about justice, but scrolls past painful news? The girl who claims to be “woke,” but uses that to feel superior? The girl who laughs at dark jokes because that’s what everyone else does?

Her energy feels scattered. She can feel the gaps.

She rolls onto her side and listens to the night.

No glowing man with a sack stands in her room. No Savior voice booms in her head: just her heartbeat and the faint hum of the fridge downstairs.

But underneath the usual noise of her thoughts, a quieter voice stirs—a guiding ache that doesn’t shout. It only asks questions.

If the World Sin Eater is real—even just as a symbol, even as something living in the human imagination—what has she been sending to him?

What pieces of herself has she traded away for belonging, or numbness, or a moment of power?

She pictures all the locked‑up energy returning—like fragments of light trying to reenter her. It looks painful, like old wounds reopening, but also… right. Necessary.

“Okay,” she whispers into the dark. “Okay. I get it. Maybe I don’t want a magic ticket anymore.”

Her voice trembles, but she doesn’t stop.

“I don’t want to be one of the people in the crowd,” she says. “I don’t want to stay a fractured soul, begging someone else to carry my mess.”

There is no answer.

But for the first time in a long time, Evelyn feels a small surge of energy rise inside her—bright, golden, clean. It moves through her chest like a warm current, lighting up hollow spaces she’s been avoiding.

She doesn’t have all the answers. She doesn’t know what soul school will look like tomorrow, next year, or in a world where questioning the script gets you attacked.

She only knows this: she doesn’t want to fade.

She wants her light back.

She wants to learn how to carry it herself.

And somewhere far beyond her ceiling—in a realm that might be real, or might be a story—the World Sin Eater feels one more soul quietly, stubbornly, begin to change.

Chapter Synopsis: Evelyn and her father discuss the historical and modern concept of a sin eater, leading her to realize that relying on others to erase personal mistakes actually fractures the soul and drains its energy. Inspired by this conversation, Evelyn writes a story where the Savior refuses to carry humanity's karmic debt, forcing souls to reclaim their own misused energy and attend soul school. Ultimately, Evelyn chooses to stop seeking a magical escape and resolves to take responsibility for her own spiritual light.
